Muktananda had suffered a serious heart attack a few years earlier, and often spoke of how his guru, Bhagawan Nityananda, appeared to him as he lay dying in the hospital and ordered him to return to the world to keep serving humanity a little longer. Perhaps Baba had begun his sexual practices as a means of revivifying himself. This is the inter­pretation, at any rate, of at least one devotee who attended another extraordinary ritual during the summer of 1982 in Ganeshpuri: the nighttime shaktipat performed by Baba in the small meditation hall adjoining his house. As Karen Schaefer, who had been initiated by Baba as a swami, recalls:
